The team is a mix of central office staff, franchisees running the sites, and two founding partners who have been alongside us since the beginning.
The WaterStarters office looks after the pieces that make the model hold together across the network. That covers engineering standards, finance, monitoring, and the franchise agreements themselves. Day to day, the water gets served by the people at each site, and that is where most of the work happens.
Looks after the model as a whole, spends a lot of time with county governments, and holds the partnership between Amref Health Africa and MegaGroup Trade together.
Hydrogeology, borehole design, solar sizing, kiosk and piped network layout, and the prepaid meter roll out. Most of what you can touch at a site started as a drawing here.
Health care providers from around the community, many of them Amref community health workers, who lead the launches and come back for the follow up campaigns.
The women and men who invest the 15 percent, look after the site every day, and share in the revenue through the FRS formula.
A shared dashboard that pulls together uptime, sales, and each site’s profit and loss. It also feeds the scenario planner used to size any new site.
Every site sits inside a county water plan. We work closely with the county administrations, and we rely on them as much as they rely on us.
WaterStarters exists because two organisations decided to build the model together, and because independent certifications keep us honest.

Africa’s largest health development organisation. Amref’s community health workers run the hygiene education, the launch campaigns and the follow up. Water without hygiene is only half of the job.

Water technology and engineering. MegaGroup designs the boreholes, solar systems, kiosks and the prepaid metering that keeps every site accountable.

The Central Bureau for Fundraising validates how we raise and spend money. Every euro donated is traceable, and we report on it.

Registered as a public benefit organisation. Donations are tax deductible in the jurisdictions where the certification applies.
